Haiti in the Heartland

Now on display at the Little Haiti Cultural Center in Miami, Florida. Haiti in the Heartland is a public art installation showcasing select works from the Waterloo Center for the Arts Haitian Art collection. Iowa's Midwest is home to an oasis of vibrant voices, colorful visions and powerful art from Haiti. Waterloo's collection started as a gift from Dr. & Mrs. F. Harold Rueling in 1977. Over the last four decades this collection has grown to over 2,000 artworks. As stewards of this collection the WCA is grounded in elevating Haiti's culture, heritage, and creative spirit through partnerships around the United States and the globe. One important partnership is with Grinnell College which is spearheading the Haitian Digital Crossroads (HADC) project. HADC aims to make access to these hidden treasures available to Haitians, artists, and scholars around the world through a public virtual interface that will include all the works in this collection, as well as Haitian art collections in other public institutions.
