WCA Creative Programming

Workshops and classes are designed for kids ages 3 and up, families, teens and adults at all levels of experience.

The WCA provides youth, teen and adult creative programming. Classes are taught in a variety of traditional mediums like painting, ceramics, drawing, printmaking, jewelry making and stained glass including a variety of specialty classes that are available for more advanced students.

We hire local practicing artists from the Cedar Valley to instruct who also have a passion for art and art education.

Registration opens May 5th

Ages 2-4

Classes include admission into Phelps Youth Pavilion for both caregiver and child.

Paint & Play

Kids and their helpers will paint with fingers,  brushes, and feathers to make whimsical  scenes! This class will focus on counting  and colors.

Preschool Picassos

Preschool Picassos Parent and children will work together using  a variety of materials to express themselves.

Puppets!

Use paper and glue to form your very  own puppet. Then use scraps of felt and  fabric to make clothes and accessories.  If time allows, short skits will be performed  during the last class.

Fused Glass Insects

Design, cut and fabricate your very own glass  insect. Once complete all insects will be  fused together in a kiln at 1300 degrees!

Wheel Throwing

Spend a couple hours a week playing with  clay. Our instructors will teach you the  basics and provide tips on how to advance  your craft. Ten pottery wheels are available  or you may want to focus on slab work.

Felted Wall-Hanging

Learn the basics of needle felting by creating  a simple image in a embroidery hoop. All  supplies will be provided.

Jewelry Making: Bezel Setting

Create a custom bezel for a cabochon  stone and solder it into place. Use  bezel setting tools to secure the stone  and finish a wearable pendant.

“Fill me Up” Bowls to Lidded Jars with Mike Knox

Join Mike Knox, a woodfire ceramicist from  Strawberry Point, for an intense two-day  workshop where participants will focus on  form and function through the development  of lidded pots. Participants receive 25lbs  of clay, and are encouraged to bring a pot  that they have made in the past for a show  and tell. An optional tour of his studio will  be offered this fall.

Journal Making with Suminagashi Marbling & Japanese Stab Binding

Make your own beautiful little handcover  journal, start to finish. First, we’ll create  marbled papers and make them into book  covers. Next, we’ll assemble the covers and  papers using a stab binding technique. You’ll  go home with a handbound 50-page journal  (7.25”x4.5”) ready to fill with stories, lists,  doodles, sketches, poems, or whatever!

Melon Basket Weaving

Create a ribbed egg basket that measures 6  inches across. Upcycled embroidery hoop  handles along with reed will be used to  weave this beautiful basket. Please  remember to bring a lunch.

Jewelry Making: Spinner Ring

Texture, solder, and shape a wide band to  form the base ring. Add a spinning outer  band and flare the edges to create a fun  fidget ring.

Cancellation Policy

Should minimum enrollment not be met, class will be cancelled, participants will be notified and a credit or a refund will be issued. If you withdraw from a class up to 3 days prior to the first session, you will receive a refund minus a $10 processing fee or a full credit towards another class registration. After that time no refunds will be given. Material fees are non-refundable.

Registration

Pre-registration is required for each class unless otherwise noted. Please register & submit payment by the registration deadline noted next to each class description. Payment is due at the time of registration. Registrations are not considered complete until payment is received. A surcharge of 4% will be added to all credit card transactions. This charge does not apply when paying by cash or check.

Inclement Weather Policy

If inclement weather occurs, WCA may cancel classes. Tune in to KWWL or Facebook for up-to-date cancellation information. Please note that whenever Waterloo Community Schools are cancelled for weather, the Phelps Youth Pavilion and WCA youth classes/programs will be cancelled.
