Free, Family Event Focuses on Cultural Diversity of Cedar Valley

CultureFestevent on Thursday, April 6 from 5:00-7:30pm, at the Waterloo Center for the Arts. This free, family event will showcase the impressive cultural diversity within the Cedar Valley, with special performances taking place throughout the evening.

CultureFest, a first-time event in 2008, was an expansion to the Waterloo Center for the Arts’ annual Waterloo All-School Arts Festival. Over 500 people, kids of all ages and their families, attended CultureFest 2008, which included the opening night of the All-School Arts Festival.

This event is unique because it involves a very inclusive group of community organizations, businesses, individuals, teachers and local middle school students. The 2014 event will again feature a variety of exhibits, performances and special activities all relating to the theme of celebrating and embracing our community’s cultural diversity. Kids and their families will enjoy the following CultureFest activities: All-School Art Exhibit, samples of International cuisine, multi-cultural craft activities, International Fashion Show, and Cultural Performances, including performances by students with local and regional artists. The Waterloo Center for the Arts’ art galleries will also be open to the public during CultureFest, including the Phelps Youth Pavilion’s McElroy Junior Art Gallery II, and selections from the Center’s permanent collection.

The opening reception of the Center’s Waterloo All-School Art Festival, showcasing over 1,000 works of art from Waterloo public and parochial K-12 students, will also take place during CultureFest.

CultureFest and the All-School Art Festival are free and open to the public thanks to the collaborative work of the Waterloo Community Schools, Waterloo Center for the Arts, Waterloo Library, UNI, ECHOES after-school program, AEA267, Volunteer Center of the Cedar Valley, Hawkeye Community College, YWCA and many local businesses who are donating their resources.
