Graphic Epistles & Messages in Motion :: Works by Fred Burton
Forsberg Riverside Galleries
May 9 – August 26, 2018

Over the course of thirty years, Fred Burton has created thousands of unique, elaborately embellished letters, postcards and envelopes. Covered in paint, collage, pen and marker – both front and back, inside and out – these one-of-a-kind epistles were mailed off to fellow artist and close personal friend Steve Gerberich who replied with his own forms of correspondence art. Gerberich saved each and every one, eventually amassing a collection of over 2,000 pieces of Burton’s mail art which he generously gifted to the Waterloo Center for the Arts in 2015. This exhibition presents the entire collection accompanied by additional paintings and prints. Examples of Gerberich’s own whimsical kinetic assemblages are also included.

Burton is a professor emeritus of painting and drawing at Memphis College of Art. He continues to produce and exhibit work in Memphis, Tennessee. Gerberich, a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, is an Iowa native who maintains a studio in Newburgh, New York.
