Celebrating 40 Years of PUNK!
40 years ago, 1986, was a banner year for punk and indie music in the Cedar Valley. 86' saw performances from bands from New York, Boston, D.C., Seattle, Spokane, Los Angeles...even Berlin, Sweden and Holland with the bigger shows featuring SST bands: Black Flag, Painted Willie and Gone. Not to forget the handful of Iowa bands that were birthed into the local scene within this era. Check out the onsite exhibition featuring some rad flyers and artwork from the 80's punk scene.

ART

Take it to the streets, the lower level of the fest, to shop from over 30 Midwest artist vendors working in every medium imaginable: abstract painting, digital drawings, fused glass jewelry, collage, letterpress, welded metal, and wearable art. Stop by the Waterloo Public Library garage from 1:00-5:00pm for a Zine Making Drop-in! Learn about this medium and create your own collage-style zine using vintage dictionaries, encyclopedias, and books. Not in the mood to DIY? You can also help the library produce copies of a zine they created about the importance of public libraries!

Skating

We are proud to partner with CedarLoo Skateboard Association as they bring the heat with an entire day of skateboarding. Why Skateboarding? Punk music played a huge role in shaping skate culture by giving it its raw, rebellious identity. The fast tempos and DIY attitude of punk matched the energy and independence of skating, especially in its early days when it existed outside the mainstream. Punk encouraged skaters to reject rules, get creative with urban spaces, and build their own communities. Together, the two cultures grew side by side, sharing a spirit of anti-authority, self-expression, and constant innovation.
